NHS Blood & Transplant

NHSBT is the Special Health Authority with responsibilities relating to organ transplantation and blood donation. The organisation has recently been reviewing its service provision, to ensure a continued reliable and efficient supply of blood, blood products and organs to the NHS.

The review was set against the backdrop of a steady decline in blood donors - a 20 per cent drop in the last six years. In advance of the announcement of service changes coming out of the review, we undertook a targeted regional media campaign to prepare the ground and raise awareness of the problems facing the Blood Service – among staff and the public - and the need to tackle them. The campaign also aimed to prompt more people to donate blood.

By offering a tailored package to regional media, including filming on location at donor sessions, interviews with staff, donors and blood recipients, we were able to generate coverage that discussed the problems facing the service without sensationalising them. The first five media opportunities resulted in 22 pieces of coverage, 17 of which were in broadcast media, including BBC East Midlands, BBC South East, ITV Central West and ITV Anglia West.
